Location
Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria, with a population of about 350 000 people. It is commonly referred to as the Sea Capital of Bulgaria. The town is situated at the end of the big Varna Bay, with a convenient and well conserved water area a port which in years handles up to 18 million tons of cargo.
History
The history of the city could be traced thousands of years back. The first residents of contemporary Varna and the surroundings were from over 10000 year old civilization. The flint and mesolite objects that were found left from the first people here, are 12000 years old. There is not much information about the early history and origin of the Thracians that inhabited this area. It is generally known that the tribe of Corbisy built a small fisherman settlement before the Greek expansion.
In 6th century a Greek police was founded under the name of Odessos. The town became fishing and farming colony and later on it turned into a real centre of commerce. Under Roman rule it became a regional centre of great importance. Being conquered and devastated several time by the barbarians, it was for some time included within the Byzantine Empire. In 9th century it was already called Varna. It is supposed that the name originates from toponymy and hydronymy of the horse people in Central Asia. After numerous wars between Bulgaria and Byzantine, Varna was included in the territory of Bulgaria in the beginning of 13th century, during the reign of King Kaloyan. Despite its reliable defence system, the town was conquered by the Turks in 1391 and suffered a decline. In 1444, during the crusade of the Polish king Vladisslav Yagello (called Varnenchik) and the Hungarian leader Yanosh Huniady, the town was under the siege of the nights. Despite their braveness, the troops ot the Christian coalition suffered a complete defeat.
After the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878 Varna became the most important Bulgarian seaport town. Many factories were opened and industrial fishing was being developed. Varna quickly established as a modern seaside resort, enhanced by the European fashion in architecture and water transport.
